Saturday June 25th: The Book Society

6/9/2016

Dear Members and Friends,

On this occasion, and commemorating the bicentennial of the Argentinean declaration of independence, Mr. Luis Alberto Crespo will talk about the background, motivations and implications of this important event for the country. The event will take place on June 25.

"In order to build a national identity, leading historians of the 19th century, Bartolome Mitre and Vicente Fidel Lopez, wrote a historical epic in order to enhance our heroes and our will to be independent. Many years later, well into the 20th century many historians made a moe precise review of what really happened, from Levenne, Inauguren, Furlong, Wast, Peña, José María Rosa, to contemporary historical disseminators, Moon, Pineapple, García Hamilton, Piossek, etc. We got a new imprint, transforming the heroes of bronze and marble to flesh and bone, with its strengths and weaknesses and managing to historical facts in its real dimension (ideologies, personal interests, distances between towns, remoteness from the mother country).

The aim of this presentation is to put in black and white what really happened, from the English invasions (1806) until the declaration of independence (1816), which I believe was the founding decade of what Argentina is today. In this decade was forged for better or worse, the relation between Buenos Aires and the Interior, the relation of the just born United Provinces of the Río de la Plata with the rest of the world.

I'm sure both my Argentine compatriots, as our Latin American brothers who have joined us in the Book Society  will have at the end of my presentation a more updated, if not different, vision of those important events for our nation".
